SUBSTANCE
Ketotifen
Curious about how Ketotifen can enhance your health? This powerful medication is classified as an antiallergic agent and asthma prophylactic, specifically designed to assist in managing mild allergic asthma, particularly in children when used with other treatments.
Ketotifen works diligently to mitigate asthma symptoms by reducing your body's sensitivity to allergens?those pesky substances that can trigger acute asthma attacks. By lessening these reactions, it paves the way for smoother breathing and a more active lifestyle.
While your healthcare provider may have prescribed Ketotifen for additional conditions, it's important to consult them for clarity. Remember, do not stop the treatment without professional advice, especially in the case of your child. This medication is tailored for individual use and should not be shared, as it can be harmful to others with similar symptoms.
What forms does Ketotifen come in? You'll find it available in:
Tablets
Each scored white tablet, imprinted with "ZADITEN," contains 1 mg of ketotifen fumarate. Nonactive ingredients include calcium hydrogen phosphate, magnesium stearate, and maize starch.
Syrup
Every 5 mL of delicious strawberry-flavored syrup contains 1 mg of ketotifen fumarate. Its nonactive ingredients consist of alcohol, citric acid, methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium phosphate, sorbitol solution, strawberry flavor, sucrose, and water.
Precautions and Warnings:
Before starting Ketotifen, it?s crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor, including existing conditions, allergies, current medications, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. These factors can significantly influence how you should take this medication.
For those with diabetes, be mindful that the syrup version contains 4 g of carbohydrates per 5 mL dose. Rare instances of decreased blood cell counts have been reported among individuals taking both ketotifen and antidiabetic medications, so consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Be aware that Ketotifen may cause drowsiness, particularly during the initial treatment phase. Parents and guardians should monitor children closely and prevent them from engaging in potentially hazardous activities until they know how the medication affects them.
If you are using other asthma treatments (like b2-agonists such as salbutamol, sodium cromoglycate, or corticosteroids like beclomethasone, budesonide, and fluticasone), do not discontinue them abruptly when starting Ketotifen. Always adhere to your doctor's instructions.
Additionally, if your child has a history of seizures, it's essential to discuss this with your doctor, as Ketotifen may increase seizure risk.
Finally, Ketotifen is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Always prioritize your health and the safety of your child by consulting a healthcare professional for tailored advice.
