Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), also known as Somatomedin C, is a vital hormone with structural similarities to insulin. It plays a key role in growth during childhood and exhibits anabolic effects in adults.
IGF-1 is fundamental for normal human development and is predominantly produced in the liver, with synthesis occurring in various tissues throughout the body.
This hormone consists of 70 amino acids, featuring two chains (A and B) linked by disulfide bonds, along with a C peptide region of 12 amino acids.
USAGEIGF-1 supports optimal bone and tissue growth, helping to lower blood glucose levels. It effectively targets fat cells to enhance fat utilization, leading to an increase in lean body mass while decreasing fat. These benefits are especially desired by athletes and bodybuilders. Elevated IGF-1 levels are associated with weight gain that stems from increased lean body mass rather than fat accumulation.
Popular among bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts alike, IGF-1 aids in faster recovery post-workout and boosts energy levels during exercise.
Commonly used for those with growth hormone deficiencies, IGF-1 injections are beneficial for both children experiencing slow growth and adults with similar deficiencies.
Research suggests that IGF-1's anabolic effects may arise from reduced protein breakdown and enhanced protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. This hormone may directly influence muscle tissue, promoting healing in cases of skin burns and other tissue irregularities.
MECHANISM OF ACTIONAs a naturally occurring hormone in human blood, IGF-1 primarily regulates the effects of growth hormone in the body. Its normal functions include promoting tissue and bone growth. IGF-1 is synthesized in various tissues in response to the presence of growth hormone in the bloodstream.
IGF-1 fosters growth across the body, stimulating growth in nearly every cell type, particularly in bones, cartilage, skeletal muscles, the liver, kidneys, nerves, skin, and lungs. In addition to its insulin-like properties, IGF-1 also aids in cellular DNA synthesis management.
ADMINISTRATIONIGF-1 is administered via subcutaneous injection into a fleshy area, such as the stomach or abdomen, and can also be given intramuscularly.
Administration Guidelines:Before administering IGF-1, ensure you use a clean, sterile syringe.
- Hold the IGF-1 vial upright and insert the syringe through the center of the cap.
- Pull the plunger to draw the desired amount (see ?Dosage? section below), then carefully remove it.
- Clean the skin at the injection site with alcohol.
- Pinch the skin around the injection area, ensuring about 2 cm of space on each side.
- Position the syringe at a 90-degree angle to the skin and insert it quickly.
- Fully depress the plunger until the syringe is empty, then withdraw it carefully.
For optimal lean muscle growth and fat loss:
Recommended Dosage:- Men: 40 mcg - 50 mcg daily
- Women: 10 mcg - 20 mcg daily
IGF-1 should not be injected more than twice a day. Typical dosage cycles last between 2 and 12 weeks. Children and adults prescribed IGF-1 for growth deficiencies should consult their healthcare provider for appropriate dosing.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTSSide effects of IGF-1 may mirror those of other growth hormones, including excessive tissue growth (acromegaly) and potential damage to joints, liver, and heart. Common side effects include joint pain, muscle discomfort, headaches, and nausea. IGF-1 may lower blood sugar levels, potentially leading to hypoglycemia. Additionally, research has associated IGF-1 with an increased risk of certain cancers, including lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers.
