Follistatin is a vital single-chain gonadal protein that plays an essential role in regulating the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This protein is encoded by the FST gene and yields two isoforms?FST317 and FST344?comprising 317 and 344 amino acids, respectively, due to the alternative splicing of precursor mRNA. By binding directly to activin, follistatin acts as a potent antagonist, effectively inhibiting the production and secretion of pituitary FSH.

Exciting research is underway to explore follistatin's role in muscle growth regulation, particularly in mice, where it functions as an antagonist to myostatin (GDF-8), a member of the TGF superfamily known to limit excessive muscle development.
