SUBSTANCE Atomoxetine

Strattera, formulated with atomoxetine, is a targeted medication for treating attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This effective treatment option is suitable for:

• Children aged six and older
• Adolescents
• Adults

Designed to complement a holistic ADHD treatment plan, Strattera should be used alongside non-pharmaceutical approaches such as counseling and behavioral therapy. Note that it is not recommended for children under six due to uncertainties regarding its safety and efficacy in this age group.

In adults, Strattera is particularly beneficial for those whose ADHD symptoms significantly interfere with daily activities, including work and social interactions, especially if these symptoms trace back to childhood.

Strattera enhances focus and reduces impulsivity and hyperactivity by increasing noradrenaline levels in the brain?a naturally occurring chemical. As a non-stimulant medication, Strattera carries no risk of addiction, though it may take several weeks for noticeable improvements in symptoms.

ADHD can present unique challenges for children and adolescents, including:

• Difficulty staying still
• Struggles with maintaining focus

These challenges are not a result of lack of effort and can lead to issues in daily life such as learning difficulties and behavioral problems at home and school. Importantly, ADHD does not affect intelligence.

Adults with ADHD may continue to face similar difficulties, which can affect:

• Work responsibilities
• Personal relationships
• Self-esteem
• Educational endeavors

Do NOT take Strattera if you:

• Are allergic to atomoxetine or any of its components (see section 6 for details)
• Have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like phenelzine within the last two weeks, as this combination can lead to severe side effects or be life-threatening. Wait at least 14 days after stopping Strattera before starting an MAOI.
• Have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure)
• Suffer from serious heart conditions that could worsen due to increased heart rate or blood pressure, which Strattera may cause
• Have experienced significant blood vessel issues in your brain, such as a stroke or aneurysm
• Have a tumor of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma)

If any of these conditions apply to you, refrain from using Strattera and consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance.

Both children and adults should consider the following warnings before taking Strattera. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have:

• Suicidal thoughts or tendencies
• Heart issues, including defects or rapid heartbeat?Strattera has been linked to increased heart rate and instances of sudden death in those with heart conditions
• High blood pressure, as Strattera may exacerbate it
• Low blood pressure, which can cause dizziness or fainting
• Unusual changes in blood pressure or heart rate
• A history of cardiovascular problems or strokes
• Liver issues, which may require a lower dosage
• Psychotic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)
• Manic episodes or increased agitation
• Aggressive or hostile feelings
• A history of epilepsy or seizures, as Strattera may heighten seizure frequency
• Mood swings or significant depressive feelings
• Uncontrolled repetitive movements or vocalizations

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of these apply to you before starting treatment to ensure proper monitoring, as Strattera may worsen these conditions.

Your physician will perform specific assessments to determine if Strattera is the right fit for you. This includes measuring:

• Your blood pressure and heart rate before and during treatment
• Your height and weight, particularly for children and teenagers throughout the treatment period

Additionally, your doctor will discuss:

• Your current medications
• Your family history of sudden, unexplained deaths
• Any significant medical conditions (such as heart issues) in you or your family

Providing detailed information will enable your doctor to assess the suitability of Strattera for your treatment plan accurately. Your healthcare provider may also recommend further medical evaluations before you begin the medication.
