Uses
This innovative medication is designed to relieve knee pain in individuals experiencing joint inflammation due to osteoarthritis. It is particularly beneficial for patients who have not found relief through other treatments, such as acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy. Sodium Hyaluronate, also known as hyaluronan, mimics a naturally occurring substance in the joints. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, promoting smoother knee movement and significantly reducing discomfort.
How to Use Hyalgan
Before beginning treatment with sodium hyaluronate, and every time you receive a refill, be sure to read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your healthcare professional. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.
This medication will be administered by your doctor via injection directly into the affected joint, typically once a week. Avoid using skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts (like benzalkonium chloride) to prepare the injection site. Your doctor may need to drain excess fluid from the joint prior to administering the injection. The dosage will be tailored to your specific medical condition and treatment response.
Important: Hyaluronate should never be injected into a vein or artery, as this may lead to increased side effects.
Post-injection, it is recommended to avoid activities that could stress your knee (like jogging, playing tennis, heavy lifting, or standing for extended periods) for 48 hours.
Initially, you might notice increased pain and swelling in the knee after the injection. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor immediately.
Consistency is key; adhere to the injection schedule for optimal results, as full therapeutic effects may take up to three injections to become evident. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include localized pain, swelling, redness, warmth, bruising at the injection site, or headaches. If any of these effects continue or worsen, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist without delay.
Remember, your healthcare provider has prescribed this medication believing that the benefits outweigh any potential risks. Most people using this treatment do not experience serious side effects.
However, if you notice severe side effects such as intense back pain, significant headaches, rapid or pounding heartbeat, fever, or skin tingling, contact your doctor immediately.
Although serious allergic reactions are rare, seek emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, including rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
