What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family, specifically designed to tackle a wide range of bacterial infections in the body. It effectively treats infections affecting the skin, bones, joints, respiratory system, sinuses, urinary tract, and certain types of diarrhea. This antibiotic is also prescribed for the treatment of gonorrhea.
Additionally, Ciprofloxacin is a critical option for individuals exposed to anthrax or specific forms of plague.
This medication is recommended only for infections that do not respond to safer treatment alternatives.
As a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, Ciprofloxacin may carry risks of severe side effects, including tendon ruptures or nerve damage, which might not be reversible.
Important Safety Information
Be aware that Ciprofloxacin can lead to serious side effects. These may include tendon problems, nerve damage, significant mood or behavioral changes, or low blood sugar levels.
If you notice symptoms such as headache, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning pain, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory issues, suicidal thoughts, or sudden joint pain or movement problems, stop taking this medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In rare cases, Ciprofloxacin may cause serious damage to your aorta, leading to severe bleeding or even death. Seek emergency medical help if you experience intense, persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.
Individuals with muscle disorders should consult their doctor before taking Ciprofloxacin, especially if they have a history of myasthenia gravis.

This antibiotic may cause tendon swelling or tearing, especially of the Achilles tendon, which can happen during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. The risk of tendon issues is higher in certain groups, including children, older adults, those on steroid medications, or organ transplant recipients.
