What is Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family, specifically designed to fight off a range of bacterial infections. This versatile medication is commonly prescribed for skin, bone, and joint infections, as well as respiratory, sinus, and urinary tract infections. It?s also effective against certain types of diarrhea and can be used to treat gonorrhea. Additionally, ciprofloxacin is indicated for individuals exposed to anthrax or certain forms of plague.

This antibiotic should only be used when safer alternatives are ineffective, as fluoroquinolone antibiotics can have severe, potentially irreversible side effects, including tendon ruptures and nerve damage.

Important Information

While ciprofloxacin can be effective, it may also lead to serious side effects such as tendon issues, nerve damage, and significant mood changes. If you notice symptoms like headaches, extreme hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, confusion, or joint pain, stop taking the medication immediately and consult your healthcare provider.

In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may affect the aorta, which could result in severe bleeding or even fatality. Seek emergency medical help if you experience intense, persistent pain in your chest, stomach, or back.

This medication may not be suitable for individuals with muscle disorders. Please inform your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

Before Taking This Medication

Do not use ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if you are taking:

  • Tizanidine
  • Other fluoroquinolones (like gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin)
  • Theophylline

Ciprofloxacin can cause tendon swelling or tearing, particularly in the Achilles tendon, either during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. The risk is heightened for certain groups, including children, older adults, steroid users, or individuals who have had organ transplants.

To ensure ciprofloxacin is appropriate for you, disclose any history of:

  • Tendon or bone issues, arthritis, or other joint conditions (especially in children)
  • Blood circulation disorders, aneurysms, or hardened arteries
  • Heart problems or hypertension
  • Genetic conditions like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Muscle or nerve disorders (such as myasthenia gravis)
  • Kidney disease
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Head injuries or brain tumors
  • Long QT syndrome (in yourself or a family member)
  • Low potassium levels (hypokalemia)

Do not give this medication to a child without consulting a healthcare professional. The effects on unborn babies are unclear, so please inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.

How to Take Ciprofloxacin

Follow your doctor?s instructions meticulously when taking ciprofloxacin. Adhere to all directions on your prescription label, and read any accompanying medication guides or instruction sheets.

You can take ciprofloxacin with or without food, just be sure to take it at the same time every day. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.

Complete the entire prescribed course of ciprofloxacin, even if you start to feel better quickly, as missing doses may lead to medication-resistant infections. Note that this antibiotic is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or common cold.

Do not share ciprofloxacin with others. Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
