What is Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is a powerful antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin family, renowned for its effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial infections. It's commonly prescribed for conditions such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and various infections affecting the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
In some cases, amoxicillin is combined with another antibiotic, clarithromycin (Biaxin), to effectively treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination may also include a medication to help reduce stomach acid.
Important Information
Be aware that amoxicillin can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. It's essential to discuss alternative non-hormonal contraceptive options, such as condoms, diaphragms, or spermicides, with your doctor to prevent unintended pregnancy while on this medication. Always complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated. Remember, this antibiotic is ineffective against viral infections like the common cold or flu. Sharing this medication is not advisable, even with individuals who have similar symptoms.
Antibiotic use can sometimes lead to diarrhea, which may occur during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. This could indicate a new infection. If you experience severe or bloody diarrhea, discontinue amoxicillin and seek medical advice immediately. Avoid taking anti-diarrheal medications unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not use amoxicillin if you have a known allergy to any penicillin antibiotics, including ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.
To ensure amoxicillin is suitable for you, inform your doctor if you have: - Asthma - Liver or kidney disease - Mononucleosis (often called "mono") - A history of antibiotic-related diarrhea - Any food or drug allergies
While amoxicillin is not expected to harm an unborn child, it is important to notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during your treatment.
How Should I Take Amoxicillin?
Follow your physician's instructions when taking amoxicillin. Stick to the directions on your prescription label, and do not change the dosage or frequency without medical advice.
Take this medication consistently at the same time every day.
The Moxatag brand of amoxicillin should be taken with food or within one hour after a meal.
Some formulations of amoxicillin can be taken with or without food. Always check your medicine label for specific instructions.
If using liquid amoxicillin, shake well before measuring the dose according to the label's instructions.
Utilize the dosing syringe provided, or a special measuring spoon or cup, to accurately measure the liquid medicine. If you lack a measuring device, consult your pharmacist. You can take the liquid directly on your tongue or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale. Consume the entire mixture immediately and do not save any for later.
Chew the chewable tablet thoroughly before swallowing.
Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet; swallow it whole.
If you are undergoing long-term amoxicillin therapy, regular blood tests may be necessary, and monitoring of kidney and liver functions could be required.
When using amoxicillin alongside clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for ulcer treatment, adhere strictly to all medication instructions. Read the provided medication guide or patient instructions, and do not adjust your dosage or schedule without consulting your doctor.
Complete the full prescribed treatment duration. Symptoms may improve before the infection is entirely cleared. Missing doses may increase the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember, amoxicillin is not effective against viral infections like the flu or common cold.
Do not share this medication with anyone else, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.
This medication may produce unusual results in some medical tests, so inform any healthcare provider treating you that you are taking amoxicillin.
