What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic classified under fluoroquinolones, expertly designed to tackle a range of bacterial infections throughout the body. However, it?s essential to note that ciprofloxacin should only be utilized when safer treatment alternatives are not available. While effective, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, carry the risk of severe or potentially irreversible side effects, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important Information
Be aware that ciprofloxacin may lead to serious side effects, including tendon issues, nerve damage, and significant mood or behavioral changes. If you experience symptoms such as headaches, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration difficulties, suicidal thoughts, or sudden joint pain, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately.
In rare cases, ciprofloxacin has been associated with damage to the aorta, which can result in life-threatening bleeding. Seek emergency medical attention for severe and persistent chest, stomach, or back pain.
If you have a muscle disorder, you may not be suitable for ciprofloxacin. Please inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.
Before Taking This Medicine
Avoid using ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it, or if:
- You are taking tizanidine;
- You have allergies to other fluoroquinolones like gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and others;
- You are using theophylline.
Ciprofloxacin may lead to swelling or tearing of tendons, especially the Achilles tendon. This can occur during treatment or months after stopping the medication. Certain populations, including children, older adults, those on steroid medications, or organ transplant recipients, are at a higher risk for tendon issues.
To ensure your safety, inform your doctor if you have a history of:
- Tendon problems, bone issues, arthritis, or joint conditions;
- Blood circulation issues, aneurysms, or artery conditions;
- Heart disease or high blood pressure;
- Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome;
- Diabetes;
- Muscle or nerve disorders, including myasthenia gravis;
- Kidney disease;
- Seizures or epilepsy;
- A head injury or brain tumor;
- Long QT syndrome in yourself or family members;
- Low potassium levels (hypokalemia).
Do not give this medication to a child without consulting a healthcare professional.
The effects of ciprofloxacin on an unborn baby are not fully understood, so inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Additionally, avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.
How to Take Ciprofloxacin
