Erythropoietin
Darbepoetin alfa is a powerful agent that stimulates erythropoiesis, mimicking the action of natural erythropoietin. Unlike the endogenous hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), which possess three N-linked carbohydrate chains, darbepoetin alfa is enhanced with five carbohydrate chains. This additional carbohydrate content does not alter the molecular structure but significantly extends its half-life compared to rhEPO, resulting in improved in vivo efficacy. Despite these modifications, darbepoetin alfa retains a highly specific affinity for the erythropoietin receptor.
As a vital growth factor, erythropoietin primarily facilitates the production of red blood cells. Notably, erythropoietin receptors are also present on various tumor cell surfaces, highlighting its influential role in cellular processes.
